Harley Quinn is my little bombproof diva - I got her from a pet store before I knew better. All I knew was that she looked sad, and she looked sick, and in my head buying her was saving her. In the end, I think I likely did.

She was quickly diagnosed with three types of bacteria in her gut, as well as IBD (irritable bowel) and has been on and off drugs to help this condition. However, she saved my life back then. At the time I purchased Harley, I was in a dark place. I was diagnosed with depression and Harley was the only reason I would get out of bed. You can't ignore a puppy who needs to pee!

After a while I quit my job and entered the animal field, Harley passed her therapy dog assessment and I started fostering. Without my beautiful mistake of buying a puppy farm girl I never would have helped the 30+ dogs and cats I've had through my doors - she has saved a lot of lives just by being her perfect, patient, loving self.

Enter Kal-El, a rescue from Keysbourough AAPS.

When I got him his name was the letter K and he spoke nothing but Mandarin. At 11 months old he knew no commands but shake - Sit Kal! Get punched in the face. Drop Kal! Get punched in the stomach. Every command warranted a paw no matter where it landed.

I spent months training him and I will admit I broke down and cried more than once. In the end when the rescue said they had an interested party I looked at him and decided that he was already home.

He is my only foster fail in tens of dogs, and he taught me the most about how much hard work a dog can take, but also taught me how much love a dog can give. He is by far the most loyal and loving dog I have ever had.

The two of them have a mutual agreement to generally leave each other alone - Kal gets on better with the fosters, and Harley prefers Jake's company (Jake is my other dog - a Saluki. He will get his own post later). However, once in a while I will catch them chasing each other through the park or taking a moment to cuddle up. I think they pretend to be indifferent to each other, but underneath it all they know they were the 'original two' and stick together.

On occasion, I've caught Kal growling at dogs who bully Harley - that's his girl and only HE can play bitey face with her. They are the funniest couple, and without them I don't know where I would be now.
