Do you ever get confused about when and where you are allowed to take your dog to the beach? Take a look at this comprehensive guide to our very pet friendly and not so pet friendly beaches.
Good to know:
There are THREE 24hr, 7 days a week, all year round off lead beaches in the Bayside Council
Sandown St Beach
Sandringham Harbour
Ricketts Point from McGregor Ave to the disabled ramp
See below for further details.
Besides knowing the times and beaches your dog is allowed, remember the following:
1. Your Beach Parking Permit (if you have one)
2. Your dog beach etiquette
3. Your manners and your dogs manners
4. Pick up after your dog
5. If rubbish bins are full, take your rubbish WITH you. Don't pile it up next to the bin
6. Supervise your dog at all times - off lead does not mean a FREE for all
7. Just because it is a known off lead area it does NOT mean that others are not allowed to use the same space.
Your responsibilities in off-leash areas
Dogs must be on a chain, cord or leash if the dog is within 20 metres of:
a children’s play equipment area
an area where a public meeting is being held
a permanently designated barbeque and picnic area
an on-leash signed lake or pond
an area where an organised sporting event is taking place.
And....
Dogs must be on leash in all car parks and beach paths
It is still your responsibility to take bags and pick up after your dog.
Owners must have effective control of their dog at all times. You must be able to recall your dog promptly and place it back on a leash if the need arises.
